KNOXVILLE—Starting this fall, the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, will offer a new doctoral concentration in business analytics to prepare students to pursue research and teaching in this rapidly growing field.
The program will be based in the Department of Business Analytics and Statistics in the UT Haslam College of Business.
The doctoral concentration in analytics is structured with two years of coursework followed by students conducting a formal dissertation. The program begins in fall 2015.
“The primary goal of the analytics doctorate is to provide qualified candidates with the intellectual and professional capabilities needed to pursue a research and teaching career in the rapidly growing field of analytics at an academic institution,” said Mandyam Srinivasan, director of the Ph.D. program in the Department of Business Analytics and Statistics and Pilot Corporation Chair of Excellence. “In support of our mission, we have recently hired three faculty members and are actively recruiting additional faculty.”
The Ph.D. concentration in analytics is designed to have faculty work with students in a collaborative relationship to create a high level of learning and research productivity. In addition to a focus on research productivity, the program will prepare students for classroom teaching.
The program’s curriculum draws upon methodologies and techniques from four closely related fields in the department: statistics, data mining, management science, and operations management.
UT’s business analytics program has been recognized for its quality by local and national publications including U.S. News & World Report, Forbes, Information Week, and My College Guide.
