The Financial Information Office (FIO) in the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Haslam College of Business handles most of the college’s financial and HR processes. Brittany Permaul, FIO’s director of finance and administration, and her team of 14 staff know even the smallest problem in their operations can grow to be a collegewide disruption. The FIO team, however, is determined to ensure all processes under their care flow smoothly.
In pursuit of that goal, the entire team took Haslam’s Graduate and Executive Education course, Lean Applied to Business Processes (LABP). Bill Peterson, LABP’s instructor, captured the FIO team’s progress through the course in a recent blog post at LeanBP. In the post, Peterson recounts how they explored course topics and practical applications like streamlining contract requests, generating internal customer surveys and applying project-status-tracking tools.
The FIO team got so much from the course that each member elected to earn a Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt to cement their dedication to continuous process improvement. As a result, the team members not only have new tools and skills to make their processes more efficient and effective, but they also have a shared buy-in to their mission.
